Pet Relocation In China: What You Need to Know

If you are moving internationally with pets, you will have to take their needs into consideration. Moving from China will require extensive planning and you will need to dedicate some time to making arrangements for your furry family members.

Entry Requirements

The requirements for entry clearance for pets changes from country to country. China only considers cats and dogs as pets for export and you will need to meet different requirements to take them with you. Microchipping and Rabies vaccination are a must, as is other vaccinations and worming. Some countries are stricter than others and might ask to keep the pet in quarantine. Make sure you understand all the requirements for the country you will be moving to. Before a pet can be exported, China Customs requires that the animal obtain a Health Certificate which can only be given by a government appointed Vet.

Preparing for the Journey

A lot of changes in a short period of time can make animals anxious. You will need to help them prepare for the journey, especially if it involves a long-haul flight and they have to be in the cargo hold. If your relocation from China will require your furry friends to spend a lot of time on a plane, make sure they are comfortable in their carriers. Each airline will have different specifications for the type of crates they accept.

Purchase the pet carriers at least six months in advance. If your pets are not used to being in a confined space, you will need to encourage them to spend time in the crate. Start by placing them in the carrier while you do household chores. Encourage them spend 10 minutes there and gradually increase the amount of time until you can leave them while you go out. They should spend at least a few hours in their crates. This should not be a punishment and you must make sure they are always comfortable and they know this is their safe space.

Pet Relocation Agents

Some countries do not allow pets to arrive on commercial flights. In these cases, you will need to enlist the services of a pet relocation agent.
